The Common Brushtail Possum

The Brushtail is the possum most Melbourne residents encounter. Stocky, silver-grey, and about the size of a domestic cat, the Brushtail is a determined creature — once it decides your roof is home, it won’t leave without encouragement.

The Common Ringtail Possum

Pseudocheirus peregrinus

The Ringtail is smaller, quieter, and often mistaken for a rat. Unlike the Brushtail, Ringtails are social animals — they tend to live in family groups, which means if you have one, you likely have several. They build their nests, called dreys, from bark, leaves, and grass.

Possums Are Protected Animals in Australia — Here’s What That Means for You

Many Melbourne homeowners don’t realise that attempting to remove a possum yourself is not only ineffective — it can land you in serious legal trouble. Under the Wildlife Act 1975 (Vic) and the national Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, all native possums are protected species. This means killing, injuring, capturing, or relocating a possum without a proper permit is a criminal offence.

The law also specifies that any possum that is trapped must be released within 50 metres of where it was captured — on the same property. You cannot relocate a possum to a park, reserve, or neighbouring street. Only licensed wildlife control operators are authorised to handle, remove, and re-home possums under specific exemptions.

You Cannot Kill or Harm a Possum

Killing, poisoning, or deliberately injuring a possum is a serious criminal offence under the Wildlife Act 1975. Penalties include heavy fines and potential prosecution.

Relocation Must Be Within 50 Metres

If you legally trap a possum, Victorian law requires it to be released within 50 metres of the capture site — on your own property. Releasing it elsewhere is illegal.

Ringtail Possums Require a Permit

Ringtail possums cannot be trapped or handled without a specific authority to control wildlife (ATC permit) issued by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA).
